To escape from it all, I’ve had different places depending on the phase of my life. As a child, I climbed the trees or sat on top of a tiki statue in my back yard. In my tweens and teens, I escaped into the stories of books and discovered the joys of long bike rides to where ever I wanted to go. I don’t think I had much escape anywhere in college and grad school since it was all so relentless. As a young mom, I escaped into exercise but as an older mom, I escaped into yard work. I loved spending the whole day trimming, watering, and sweeping. Post-kids/divorce, I escape by listening to audiobooks, sitting in a bathtub, or hiking.

I like eating sweet potato fries but I had always made them in the oven which never led to a crisp fry. I tend to season with strange things like zatar or herbs so although they are always tasty, they are never crunchy like a true deep fryer can make them. Last xmas, DH bought what he thought was an air fryer but was really a pressure cooker. He didn’t give it to me in front of the kids because he didn’t want to be “that guy” who gave his new wife an appliance for her first married xmas. I didn’t have time to open and inspect because we were leaving for AU but upon returning 5 months later, I discovered it was a pressure cooker. I ended up selling the brand new appliance for half price just to move it out of the house. The day after T-day, we decided to get a combo air fryer and toaster oven so we could get rid of both our toaster and toaster oven. Overnight delivery is a modern miracle so I was excited to make the first batch of sweet potato fries that were hot crispy with no oil. I can’t wait to air fry some more!!

When my son was young, he wanted to get a dog but he was allergic to them so we looked into getting a hypoallergenic dog like a labradoodle. I wasn’t excited about getting a particular breed because there are so many dogs in shelters but a poodle or labradoodle wasn’t going to be found in a shelter. We found a breeder in Tehachapi and waited for a litter to be born. When the dogs were ready to be adopted, we drove 3 miles in each direction to pick our new puppy. I made my kids read “Dogs for Dummies” before we started the adventure and one of the suggestions was to have a list of names, call each of them to the dog and see which one it responded to. The kids made a list in the car. When we arrived, we sat in a pen with the two female dogs available and played with them for a long time. We chose the one that was the most friendly and happily brought her home. The breeder gave us a folder with information about our new family member and I just found that folder:

Our dog lived 13 years and 11 months to the day and although she wasn’t always a good dog, she was our family and we loved her.

Once upon a time when our mom was alive, my sister and I were both on a Wells Fargo bank account with her so we could all have access to money to help her if needed. After mom died, we were focused on other issues and I forgot about this account. I had a separate WF account and didn’t notice that my account and mom’s account were on the same statement. When I investigated closing my WF account, I discovered mom’s account. Sister had begun to use mom’s account as her own so she tried to remove me and mom from the account but was informed I had to be present to close the account. She came to visit me but there were no bank workers who could help her. Really? She made an appointment explaining what she needed, we both arrived, and were told that the person who we had the appointment with couldn’t help us. After complaining, we were shuffled to a manager who took an hour to remove mom and me from the account. This was unnecessarily difficult since we had a death certificate and we were both present with valid IDs. Wells Fargo fail.
